Who are we?
This year, we’re collaborating with a local independent artist to record new tracks, and our members have the exciting chance to arrange songs for our first-ever album.
Gen II has officially begun, and we couldn’t be more excited! With four new members joining the Echotones family – all of whom bring prior collegiate A Cappella experience – we’re ready to take Nottingham by storm.
We’re a competitive A Cappella group based at the University of Nottingham, known for our passion for music, dynamic performances, and tight-knit community. Whether you’re an experienced singer or someone just looking to explore the world of a cappella, we welcome everyone with a shared love for creating unique and memorable musical experiences.
Our group focuses on more than just music — we’re about fostering creativity, building friendships, and giving our members the chance to express themselves both on and off stage. As part of the Echotones, we provide a platform where every voice matters, from arranging and performing songs to experimenting with harmonies and styles.
Last year, our first year, was a remarkable chapter in our journey.
We took the stage at SB Fest, celebrated together at the UoNSU Activities Awards, and performed at SNAC in Leeds, sharing our passion with the broader A Cappella community.
We ventured to London, scoring discounted tickets to watch the OACs, offering us inspiration for our own future performances. Whether on campus or across the UK, we thrive on creating moments that matter.
Bringing together student passion and musical innovation, we’re here to shake up collegiate A Cappella. It’s time for something new, bold, and dynamic.

FAQs
Who can join the Echotones?
Any student at the University of Nottingham, or who is eligible for associate membership in the University of Nottingham Students’ Union (including UoN alumni, staff, NTU students and UNIC students)! Whether you’re a seasoned singer or just starting out, we welcome all abilities. We value enthusiasm and a love for music above all.
Do I need to audition to join?
Yes, we hold auditions at the start of the academic year to ensure a balanced blend of voices and skills within the group. Keep an eye on our social media for audition dates and tips!
What kind of music do you perform?
We perform a wide range of genres, from pop and indie to musical theatre and more. Our members also arrange original pieces, so there’s always something fresh and exciting in our repertoire.
How often do you rehearse?
We rehearse twice a week, typically in the evenings. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled in the lead-up to performances and competitions.
What is the commitment level like?
As a competitive group, we expect regular attendance at rehearsals and events, especially during performance season. However, we understand that university life is busy, and we strive to maintain a healthy balance.
Do you perform in competitions?
Yes! We’re preparing for our debut at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCAs) this year, and we frequently perform at events like SB Fest, UoN events, and SNAC in Leeds.
What social events do you have?
We host a variety of social events throughout the year, including group outings, dinners, and casual socials. It’s a great way to bond with other members and have fun outside of rehearsals.
Do I need to be a member of the Nottingham A Cappella Society to join?
Yes, joining the Nottingham A Cappella Society is required to be part of the Echotones. Membership provides access to resources, events, and support from the wider a cappella community at the university.
How much does it cost to join?
The cost of membership is split between Nottingham A Cappella Society fees and any additional expenses for rehearsals, performances, and trips. We do our best to keep costs low and offer discounted opportunities where possible. Membership for the society costs £5, and for Echotones costs £10.
Can I get involved in arranging music?
Absolutely! We encourage members to arrange songs and explore their creativity. If you’re interested, you’ll have the chance to contribute to our setlists and performances.
Do you perform outside of Nottingham?
Yes! We regularly perform at events across the UK. Last year, we travelled to Leeds for SNAC and even to Edinburgh Fringe with some of our members performing alongside RadioOctave.
